OEMs and Dealers: Don’t Be Like Larry
[Edison, introducing the electric light bulb]
“Edison, can I be honest with you?... It STINKS! You’re wasting your time and it’s sad.”
- Larry David, FTX Crypto Super Bowl commercial
We’ve all had moments where we’re like Larry - poo pooing the greatest inventions in history.
This commercial really resonated with me as I have had MANY “Larry moments” in my life. Here are some true examples from my personal file.
First Car Phone…
John: “WHY….seriously, you can’t wait to look for a pay phone?”
Early Netflix…
John: “Who is dumb enough to send movies through the mail? That CANNOT possibly make money. Besides, I love going to Blockbuster to pick through the movies!”
Early Amazon…
- John: “Are you kidding me? I can sit and read at Books-A-Million for FREE!”
Ahh yes… guess I was wrong about those things.
History has shown new ideas and inventions are always met with fierce opposition and ridicule. Steve Jobs famously stated he invented things people didn’t know they wanted, and we all know how THAT worked out.
Which (always) brings me back to my favorite subject - Mobile Service. Back in February 2020, when I was first introduced to the opportunity to launch and train Mobile Service Dealers, I thought “I don’t get it.” But I decided 25 years behind a Service Director’s desk was (quite) enough so I took a leap of faith.
Once the bigger picture was explained to me, I saw the future value of Mobile Service. Then COVID hit, and the appetite for delivered products and services amped up exponentially. Finally, EVs delivered the knock-out punch and now Mobile Service is an absolute no-brainer.
OEMs and Dealers: your metaphorical EVs are sitting at the intersection of Blockbuster and Netflix. Which path will you choose? Business as usual until this “fad” goes away? Or will you be a fearless pioneer, embrace Mobile Service, and secure the future relevance of your company?
It’s SHOWTIME. Connect with Next>Level and let’s put Mobile in Motion.™ We offer an unsurpassed combination of real-world experience and the most advanced innovations. BAR NONE.
