Technician Wage Study Results
In my Mobile Service field experience, I encountered MANY situations where the Dealer struggled with Tech staffing. In nearly every case, I found they were not paying enough to attract and retain good Technicians. So, I decided to perform a quick and dirty study to see “how much is enough?”, not only in the automotive sector, but in other competing trades such as electrical, plumbing, HVAC, etc. This is relevant as these Technicians are also mobile, they work with tools and equipment, interface with customers, prepare estimates, and sometimes collect payment. I also looked at position pay for the unskilled who could be molded and trained for a future in Mobile Service.
Here is my average wage per hour findings based on the Tampa Bay market:
Ø Fast Food & Retail (unskilled): $15.66
Ø Trade Helper / Apprentice (unskilled with intent to learn trade): $17.00
Ø Dealer Mobile Technician $18.00
Ø Oil & Tire Tech – Non-Mobile: $18.24
Ø Aftermarket Mobile Technician: $22.81
Ø Plumbers, Electricians, HVAC: $26.37
Here are some perks I encountered along the way:
Ø Next day pay: McDonalds
Ø Sign-on / Retention Bonus $500-$10,000: McDonalds, Wal Mart, and several others
Ø Paid Training / Tuition: Safelite Auto Glass and Others
Ø Flex-Schedule (think UBER): yourmechanic.com
Ø Clock-Flat Rate Hybrid Pay Plans: Dealers
Ø Tool Allowance: Dealers
Ø Hourly Pay: Most
Ø 401K with matching funds: Some
The Outlier:
Yourmechanic.com
, an aftermarket Mobile Service provider pays experienced, trained Technicians between $30-$70 per hour (assumed flat rate). The subject Technician in this case defected from Dealership ranks and earns $48 per hour. He also enjoys an UBER-like flex schedule.
Opinion:
It is my humble opinion that Mobile Auto Technicians bear a ridiculous level of responsibility, they wear a dizzying collection of hats, and they perform repairs that are MORE technical than plumbers, electricians, HVAC, etc. If you are contemplating the validity of this statement, kindly refer to my recent LinkedIn podcast “Astronauts, Unicorns & Mobile Techs” posted on my company page. Then perform a wage study in your local market. I think you will agree. Mobile Service Techs should be compensated on par with these other trade professionals. I hope this study has been helpful. It is my wish that Mobile Service Dealers recognize the worth of the men and women who go out there every day and get it done… and reward them accordingly. #gonextlevel
